Meet the Symphony of the Potomac
About the Orchestra
The Symphony of the Potomac is a community-based, primarily volunteer orchestra under the direction of Joel Lazar. The orchestra provides Montgomery County and the great Washington, D.C., area with the opportunity to enjoy symphonic music at a reasonable price throughout our season’s four annual concerts at the Cultural Arts Center in Silver Spring.
We gave our inaugural performance as an independent orchestra in June 2008, having previously played together for nearly 40 years as the Jewish Community Center Symphony Orchestra in Rockville, Maryland.
Concerts frequently feature acclaimed artists, such as pianists Rachel Franklin, Alon Goldstein, and Sayaka Jordan; violinists Ricardo Cyncynates and Amy Beth Horman; cellist Steven Honigberg; clarinetist Alex Fiterstein; soprano Rebecca Littig; and the Marcolivia violin/viola duo.
About Our Music Director
The SOTP’s renowned conductor, Joel Lazar, has been the director of the group since it was founded in 2008. A prolific conductor in the Washington, D.C., area, he is an avid supporter of musical community orchestras and has conducted with some of the major orchestras in the DMV area.
About Our Board
An all volunteer-run organization, our board is responsible for the administration of the orchestra and everything ranging from running the day-to-day of the orchestra as well as planning future seasons to continue providing music for our fellow residents in the DMV.

We are always open to new members of all ages. If those dates and times don’t work for you, we hold auditions in-person and virtually on a rolling basis throughout the year!
The SOTP takes musicians of all stripes, but is best suited for musicians who aren’t afraid of taking on difficult music.
